Agnes Theresia Zimmerman born 1858 in Weggis
This lady was my maternal grandmother born 24 June 1858 in Herrenmatt, Weggis, Switzerland. Her parents were Alois Zimmerman, a civil servant and Elizabeth Martin. They were married in London on 25 Oct. 1856, father of Elizabeth being named as William Martin of Grays Inn, London, so apparently a lawyer. They returned to live in Weggis where Agnes was born in 1858.Alas, she was left an orphan as a small child and was adopted by Thomas Martin, brother of William, a wealthy merchant living in Dublin. She married my maternal grandfather, a lawyer named John Scully and they lived in a splendid house named Priory Lodge. There's a good story here somewhere. What was Elizabeth doing in Switzerland when she met Alois ?His father Remigius is described as a farmer on the marriage cert. and a shoemaker on the birth cert.My mother told me that she didn't remember her mother as she had died when she was a baby in 1895, but that in 1904 her father had taken all the children on a trip to Weggis, presumably to visit his wife's relations.I'd love to know the whole story.
