Hi Sue,

I am researching my son-in-laws family which has led me to the family of John Rohrbacher, whose household I found in Iowa Co., Iowa in the Amana township in 1870 and again in that same county, but in the Marengo township in 1880.
I found a marriage record for him dated 24 April 1862 in Johnson Co. Iowa to Susan Zuber.

In 1870, John and Susan show they were both born in Baden, as were both their parents.
Their oldest son, Jacob, age 6 (c1866) was born in Iowa.
They have two other children in 1870 named Susan, and Elizabeth (called Phillipina in 1880).

In 1880, they have two more children: Katie and Annie.
Also in their home in 1880 is a 19 yr. old man whose name appears to be Wm. Zempleman. He is a Carder in the Woolen mill, and while he was shown born in Iowa, both his parents are shown to have been born in Germany.

I later found the death index record for Phillipina E. Freeman (she was Phillipina Elizabeth Rohrbacher until she married George M. Freeman in Iowa, then they moved to Missouri, then Boulder Co., then divorced sometime by 1920, then both ended up in Los Angeles Co., CA., where they lived out their lives. George remarried, but it doesn't look like Phillipina did.)

My point is that the information shown on her death record is that her mother's surname was Shemenhour. However, her mother's name when she married John Rohrbacher, was Zuber. I'm guessing her mother married 1st and briefly to a Zuber and he died or they divorced and then, "Susan" married John Rohrbacher and had at least 5 children with him.
The surname shown for Phillipina's father on her death certificate was spelled Phorpacha...an obvious mispelling of the name Rohrbacher...so I'm thinking that the informant of the death record may have also mispelled her mother's surname as Shemenhour when in fact it may have been something more like the young 19 yr old man's name in the home in 1880, which was Zempleman or Zimbleman.

Anything ring any bells here?
Christi
