The Edict of Nantes
Posted by: Mike Zerby (ID *****4808) Date: January 24, 2005 at 23:33:27

The proposed theory is that the Zerbes came to Germany (ie: Kettenbach) as Huguenots from France after the Edict of Nantes was revoked and protestants lost their rights and were even persecuted. But that can not be the reason. Johann Martin and Johann Phillip Zerbe, who came to America in 1710 were sons of Martin Zerbe born in Kettenbach circa 1640 (died in Kettenbach in 1694). The Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. So the revocation of the edict could not have been the reason the Zerbes left France (Lorraine as the story goes) since the Zerbes were in Kettenbach at least 45 years before.
I'll be driving to Kettenbach soon (I live about an hour away) to see if I can dig up some solid information on how the Zerbes came to Germany.
