Since this original message is a bit dated, I'm not certain how helpful I can be. My grandfather, Walter Zarr would have been a double cousin of Leroy. Both of their mothers were sisters, Lydia and Isabell Heaston.

According to LaPorte vital records, Leroy was born in that county on 18 Apr 1891, the son of William Zarr and Isabella Heaston. He married Goldie Collins on 25 Jan 1913 (?) in La Porte Co. There one other child (before 1920) was Evangaline, born 6 Jan 1912 (?) Leroy in the 1910 Census is listed as 18, single and a farm laborer.

William Zarr b. 1853 in PA was married on 21 jul 1878. Isabella Heaston b 1858 was the daughter of John Heaston (1822-1903)and Delilah Dill (1822- bef 1880). The Heastons are shown as Easton, Heaston, Heistland, Heistand and other variations. The Heastons lived in Newton County and moved to La Porte sometime after 1880.

William Zarr was the son of John Zarr (1814-1903)and Catherine (Mrs. Zarr on the death record)(1815-1897). John served in the 12 Illinois battery. They are buried in Kingsbury. Lot 1, Blk 6, sec 1 (right behind the church). There is a stone to their child, but it was too worn to read.

My data gets murky here, but I have John Zarr as the son of Jacob Zarr (1795- ?)who was the son of Georg Zarr and Catherine Keifer.

I believe the family came from the Alsace region. One source says France and another Germany. This area has been part of both. They settled in the Berks and Bucks Counties in Pennsylvania. Our branch moved around 1850s to Ohio and then to Indiana. William was probably the last child born back in PA.

The family seems to have lived in the southern part of La Porte county in Noble and Union townships. Most were farmers. My grandfather became a painter and going a little farther a field met a girl from Michigan City.
