Hi Shirly, Franklin and Gilbert shared the same Great-grandfather who remained in Beikheim. Two af his sons came to America. Gilbert is the son of Herman the son of Henry. Gilbert was born in 1902 and married Dorothy Elsesser. Gilbert's grandfather's younger brother was John
who had a grandson Franklin through his son Gustav Adolphus.
Franklin Truckenbrod married Katherine Elsesser I think in 1945. My granfather Carl Truckenbrod was Franklin's Cousin.
So I think they are your mom's cousins because of the odds of having the same maiden name. I am waiting to find a Zapf in the family tree. The web site Mr. Appell had in Germany has been turned off but the information is had by
