Hi Susan. First off, William Zane was NOT from Denmark; that is a myth, created by Zane Grey. The immigrant Zane was Robert, who came here in the 1680's with William Penn. He came, I believe, from Ireland, but was originally English. Robert's son, Nathaniel, had several children, of which William was the youngest. So, you see, William was American born. William's children were Silas, Ebenezer, Jonathan, Andrew, Isaac, and Elizabeth.

Zane Grey was a great grandson of Ebenezer. When he wrote his Zane family trilogy (Betty Zane, Spirit of the Border, The Last Trail), he said the original Zane was a Danish nobleman. Actually, according to Diane Nichols, the family name was originally Zanni, and we came from Venice, Italy!

I am a descendant of Isaac and Myeerah...or maybe Andrew. I'm still investigating that. Diane, who knows more about the family than anyone (except, of course, God), is of Jonathan's line. There's also a lot of Zanes in New Jersey, from Nathaniel's other children. And in Hawaii--except they're mostly Chinese.

And, no, actor Billy Zane and bodybuilder Frank Zane are not related to us.
