It seems as if in some way we are all related and hail from Prussia on the Baltic Sea.I have been in the area and there are in some cases a full page of Zahnows in the telephone book.
My name is John Radie Zahnow, Jr., and my grandfather, Herman Willard Zahnow who just past in June, 2000 at the age of 89 was from Saginaw, Michigan. His background is not clear, his father died suddenly and there was never much information about his mother. The entire family worked in the lumber business and Herman was no different. He worked for his father a Lumberman in Saginaw until he was ready for university.Because he was having too much fun driving across country with his friends after high school, Herman missed the beginning of classes at Kenyon College, in Ohio.Instead he went to Michigan State but was unable to finish due to the depression.Hermann later went to work for Johns Manville in Saginaw/Detroit and then moved to Cleveland. There Herman, met Virgina Radie, a farm girl from rural Medina County Ohio.Virgina, May Queen and Graduate of Baldwin Wallace College, married Herman in appoximately 1938-1940.Subsequently, Herman and Virginia had daughters Patricia, Karen, and son (my father) John.Herman later moved to work for a lumber company named Weiler Wilhelm.Herman ran this company until heart problems in 1968 forced him to turn the reigns over to his son John who was fresh out of Michigan State.
In terms of this branch of Zahnows, I am the last boy. Thus the buck stops here. But, if anyone can make any connections between Herman, his father and mother, and their descendants I would greatly appreciate it.
Further back, our name is of Polish decent. Can someone elaborate?
