I was married to a Cope. My former father-in-law told me that the Cope name did not come from the English Copes as some thought, but from an ancestor Mardin Kob or Cob. Mardin Kob was Dutch and my father-in-law stated it came down by word of mouth in family history that this family used to take everything out of the Dutch homes and wash down walls and all with buckets of water. A lot of the early pioneers to Jamestown etc. lived for some time in Holland before coming to American. Not surprised to see a Dutchman in the ancestry somewhere. This family also descended from Richard Pace in Jamestown. He is in many history books including childrens histories of Jamestown.
