I mostly follow the Yox family of Maryland...but I do not that the only other place where I find them (pre-Md clan) is in NY and I wonder if they are related.

I have found your husband's mother on the 1900 census:

West Seneca, Erie County, NY
Yox August L., Head, W, M, April 1859, NY, Germany, Germany
Augusta, Wife, W, F, Sept 1863, NY, Germany, Germany
El--ier, Son, W, M, Dec 1883, NY, NY, NY
George, Son, W, M, Sep 1885, NY, NY, NY
Eward, Son, W, M, Nov 1887, NY, NY, NY
Liddie, Daughter, W, F, Dec 1890, NY, NY, NY
Leoda, Daughter, W, F, July 1892, NY, NY, NY
Ju-able, Daughter, W, F, Mar 1894, NY, NY, NY
Cora, Daughter, W, F, Oct 1897, NY, NY, NY

From what I understand from census records, the MD Yox family came from Kur-hessan (current day Hessen-Kassel, Germany)..and the original name was JOX or JAX.
I hope that this helps.
