In Reply to: Richard, b. ca. 1654, VA to Thomas and Ann (Sturman) Youell by Duane Boggs of 571

I believe that Ann Smith, the sister of John and first wife of Richard Youell/Yowell, was the daughter of Robert Smith and Anne ____. Robert was b. abt. 1620 and d. 1660/1661. Robert Smith, Thomas Youell/Yowell, and Thomas Sturman and his son John Sturman were close friends and caused a bit of a ruckus in Maryland before they moved to Westmoreland County around 1650. They were obviously Protestants and were having it out with the Catholics:

Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1636-1647, p.175:
[16 January, 1646]

Mark of (T) Thomas Sturman
ffrancis Graye
John Hampton
John Sturman"

The Thomas Yewell/Youell/Yowell mention in this record would be Richard's father - Thomas Yewell/Youell/Yowell who married Ann Sturman the daughter of Thomas Sturman. John Sturman is Thomas' son. Robert Smith, Thomas Yewell/Youell/Yowell, Thomas and John Sturman, as a group, are frequently in the Maryland court records in the 1640s. There was another Thomas Yewell who was born abt. 1636 and died in Talbot County Maryland in 1698, but he would have been way too young to be hanging out with Robert Smith and the Sturmans.

Robert Smith was married twice. First to Rosamond ________ (m. 1638), and second to Anne_________. Robert and Rosamond had John, Sarah and William. Robert and Anne had Robert Smith Jr., Ann (who I believe married Richard Youell/Yowell), Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Jane. John mentioned in the Westmoreland County Order Book 15 Jul 1677 would be Ann's older half-brother.
