Ken,
I just found this web-site yesterday, and found it very interesting that the above described killing of Christopher Lewis was told me by my father Raymond Weldon Yow b. July 13th,1914, d.November 9th, 1995 in Palmyra, Illinois. I wrote it down at time. My dad said "my greatgrandfather Yow was killed at Helena,Arkansas over politics,He must have been a Republican in Democrat territory. It was done by a friendly enemy".
I don't know where he heard this, I assume from my g William Thomas Yow b.July 1,1881 d.April 16,1955[ who died while living with my family in Martinsville,Illinois and buried at Cape Girardeau,Missouri] whom everyone called "Tom" or my gg Louis Calvin b.June 18,1851,d.1915 in Cape Girardeau, MO[He went by Calvin]. The story told me was that men came from all around to fight Calvin who was held to be the toughest man around Grand Tower, Illinois. Even after becoming blind in later years when a younger man challenged Calvin he told him he was blind but if he insisted just grab him by his arm, which the young man did, and Calvin proceeded to grab him and whip him, and supposedly wasn't challenged after that.I don't know what time might have added to the story, but I heard it many times from my Dad. I now have a picture of GG Calvin and his wife Sarah Cheek and some of their children[Iwas always told that she was full blooded Cherokee and she does look it. According to legend and the picture, Calvin was a very tall man.
Sorry to give such a long reply
