I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of a young woman taken by B. T. Gregory?, Shelbyville, TN. It is identified on the back of the mount in period ink handwriting:
"Emma L. Erwin.
With much love."

Myrtle Street), Kings Co., CA.
Emma L. Young, born Oct 1859 in TN, was the daughter of a farmer, William Young, born about 1815 in TN, and Catherine (maiden name unknown), born about 1827 in TN. On 10 Oct 1878, in Bedford Co., TN, Emma married a farmer, Martin P. Erwin, born about 1855 in TN. The couple had two children: Ethel Pheifer Irwin, born 30 Aug 1879 in TN, died 18 Dec 1959 in Kings Co., CA; and William Martin Erwin, born 8 Sep 1881 in TN, died 13 Nov 1955 in Kings Co., CA.
