I'm a NZer living in Australia, and a few years back came across a Scottish guy (last name Matchett), who said he was related to the Yorston family.

He mentioned the Yorston's in the Orkney islands, and told a story of the family history (not too sure whether it was true but it was a great story!)

Apparantly back in the middle ages there was an Earl of Leith Ness (Sp?), who was a bad guy, pillaging villages etc. So the villages got a band of Nordic guys to come across and wipe the Earl out. Having down so the Jorstons (sp?) were given some land in the orkeny islands as payment. J turned to Y and there you have it!

Believe it or not, it makes a great story to tell your friends and family!!
