My grandmother, Juanita Yonts Fleming, was a daughter of Judge Lilly Yonts and his first wife, Perlina Jane Anderson. She always said that the old family name had "von" in front of the Yonts. She said she remembered one of her uncles signing his name "von Yontz" before WWII, but dropping the "von" when the U.S. got involved in the war, so his name would sound less German. Her grandfather had told her that they all used to be called von Yontz, so when looking through old records alphabetically you should also check out the Vs as well as the Ys.
If I had not known the various spellings of this last name as well as Perlina's nickname, I would not have found the KY death records for Perlina or her twin boys. Perlina died giving birth to twin boys; one of the boys died the same day and the other died about four days later. The names were spelled three different ways, and Perlina was listed under one of her nicknames, Tina (Teeny). I asked my grandmother once why her mother was called Liny by family, but was Tina on her death certificate and she said that Teeny was a common nickname for Perlina. So that may also help people who are looking for other Perlinas in the records.
