You are right to question the birth date and location of Matthias #2.To my knowledge, no one has ever found evidence of the Matthias Yoakum Sr's family being in the Tulpehocken region of PA prior to coming to the South Branch of the Potomac.Where he first located after arriving in America and where/when he remarried to "an Irish girl" (according to Helen Black) is not yet known. Thus the birthplace and dates of Matthias Sr's children (other than Felty and Philip Paul) cannot be confirmed. Here is the documented information that I have on Matthias #2.I've not done alot of research on him so there is very probably a great deal more out there in KY records.Hope this helps.

Family information from Draper Mss, 12CC #4 & 5 which give info on Yoakum family, listing 8 children.Various undocumented family histories list 10 children but without support of claim.
From Draper MSS. 12CC #5, interview with JACOB STEVENS, son-in-law to MATTHIAS YOAKUM. [Jacob Stevens married to Sally/Sarah? Yoakum.]His list of the children of Matthias Yoakum #2 may be earliest known record of children's names.

H. C. Smith in his book "History of the Yoakum...." lists 10 children. The additional children listed include:George Yocum who married Jane Ballew in 20 Oct 1806 Wayne Co, KY John Yocum who married Elizabeth King and Sarah Sportsman.(Smith is notorious for incorrect and undocumented material.)
Has anyone proven or disproven if these two are sons of Matthias Jr? Could the John who married Elizabeth King be the "Jno" noted by Shane? I have never seen any info. put forth on a Jonathan Yoakum, yet it seems there are a few John Yoakums in search of a family.
Rosanna Yokum born 1778 who married William Higgins--wondering if she is an illegitimate daughter of Caty Yocum McGary or a "lost" daughter of Matthias Yoakum Jr.

Gentlemen,
I have in my possession a very old Bible in two volumes which I have been told was the first Bible taken into the State of Kentucky by Colonel McGary (or McGarry) with Daniel Boone.
This Bible was printed by Richard Watkins, one of His Majesty's Printers at Edinburgh MDCCXLIII and contains family records of births, marriages and death including the following names
McGarry, later spelled McGary
Ray
Yocum (or Yorom)
Drake
The names Brown, Bousland (or Borsland), Clark (?), Rosan, and Thomson also appear. The following names and dates appear clearly and can be readily distinguished:-
Year of Birth Name
1720 June 20 William Ray
1726 Dec 18 Rosanah McGarry
1730 Nov 19 Mercy McGarry
1738 Mar 26 Cathroin McGarry
1739 Dec 27 Hannah Yocom (ssp: wife of Matthias??)
1741 Dec 18 Mary McGarry
1747 Mar 10 Hugh McGarry
1758 Catherine Yocom

1791 Nov 9 (or 13) Jesse McGary
1800 Feb 28 James McGary
1802 Dec 19 Milley Harlan McGary
1805 Hugh McGaryDIED
Names appearing:-
James Brown Jr.
Samuel Bousland (or Borsland)
John Clark (or Black)
Miss Mary Thomson
J. James Ray
Jesse Ray
Rosan.
In addition to the above, there are a number of names not readily distinguishable, but by methods employed by those familiar with the investigation of ancient records, additional names and dates can undoubtedly be determined.
This Bible has been in the possession of the McGary family for nearly two hundred years and frequent mention was made by one member now deceased of the great value of these volumes to the State of Kentucky because of their early association with her pioneers. Needless to say, the great age alone make this Bible of very considerable value. The contents include a table of weights and measures mentioned in Scripture, a table of time, a table of kindred and affinity wherein whosoever are related are forbidden in Scripture to marry together, the Psalms of David in Metre, and the Bible is stated to be newly translated out of the original Greek. I am bringing this to your attention as I understand you are interested in perpetuating the history of your State. If you are not interested in this Bible will you kindly advise me of any Historical Society or other body or individual in your state who may be interested in its existence.
Very respectfully,
Mrs. Thos. K. Elliott Jr

Note: The Filson Club replied Jan. 22, 1927 stating "...The Filson Club would like very much indeed to own it, but unfortunately it has not the money with which to purchase such relics."
Mrs. Cornelia L. Elliot sent a similar letter to the Louisville Courier Journal dated January 6, 1927.[this letter had 1799 Nov 9 (or 13) for birth of Jesse McGary instead of 1791 Nov 9 (or 13)]In this letter, Mrs. Elliott states "This Bible was given to me by my father-in-law, Daniel McGary. He was born in Kentucky, later on moved to Texas, where he was well known in the news-paper circles. His paper was "The Houston Age" I married his son Samuel Hopkins McGary, deceased, who was editor of the "Beaumont Journal."
On March 3, 1927 Kirby C. McGary [on letterhead of Perry Brown & Co., Inc. Real Estate Brokers Licensed Auctioneers, 402 Hibernia Bank Building Phone Main 1700 New Orleans, LA.] sent a follow-up letter to the Filson Club, again offering to sell the Bible.April 22, 1927, the Filson Club replied, again stating that they "have no funds to purchase such relics."
