For those of you interested in the Dr. Franklin L. Yoakum and son Dr. Finis E. Yoakum tree there's an interesting article in last Sunday's (6/18/06) LA Times by Cecilia Rasmussen "Then and Now" column regarding Dr. F.E.Y. and his controversial spiritual and utopian movements there following his near fatal accident in Denver, 1894. The writer tracked me down for some comments after hearing that I had some good photos and family documents.
This colorful family member pledged his life to helping LA's indigent population from his arrival until his death in 1920, a source of irritation to some in the area. The favorite tidbit I learned during the research was a bartender once told a drunken patron to "either go to hell or go to Yoakum's", referring to the good Doctors' habit of handing out nickels for streetcar fare so drunks could find salvation at his Pisgah Home in Highland Park (now a historic site).
During his crusade he also started Pisgah Grande, a 3200 acre utopian movement in the mountains near Simi Valley. At its peak 600 people lived and worked self sufficiently in this remote SoCal area.
