I added the Old Austria posting to the Austria Genealogy Forum http://genforum.genealogy.com/austria/messages/5101.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/austria/messages/5101.html and had a reply within 24 hours. The person's name was Beth and she might be helpful in the tracing of our families back into Old Austria.
This was her reply to my original posting and I have since responded to it.
Hi Kermit,
Judging by the Ellis Island database, most Yerman/Jerman families came from Slovenia (which was within the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time; hence the idea that they were "Austrian").
Most of the church records of the Slovenian towns they came from are available on microfilm through your local LDS Family History Center, so you could research your family tree quite a way back, once you determine which of the towns they originated from.
What year did your Anton Yerman or Jerman come to the U.S.?
Beth Long
