I recently reviewed files at the Maryland Historical Society that provided information about the Ellyson Yerby of Lancaster County, VA who married Hannah Meredith.

In letters written in 1834 to his brother-in-law Thomas Meredith of Baltimore he stated that his father was the late Capt. Thomas Yerby and that his father's estate had been administered by the late Col. Wm. Gibson. A recent chancery court suit had been settled and Yerby was obligated to pay considerable money. Letters from the 1840s refer to children George, Lemuel, Maria and Virginia. A Lemuel Yerby wrote Meredith to order a cloak in 1836 and referred to “my brother Ellyson” and family. Ellyson left Lancaster County in the mid 1830s, finding the life of a farmer precarious and demanding. He spent some time in Baltimore, and then settled in Richmond City, Virginia where he ran a dry goods store during the 1840s.
