Yeatts, Pittsylvania county Virginia

My earliest known ancestor arrived in America in 1635, in Nansemond County Virginia. I am attempting to trace back from the time he boarded ship in Gravesend England.
I have discovered that the name Yates, Yeates and other variations , might be derived from "John ATTAYATE" yr. 1340. Does anyone have any theories on the name.
