Martin-
I drafted you a very detailed response and then promptly deleted it accidentally.Which may have been for the best since I do have a tendency to blather.I hope you'll find the following more concise.
Thank you very much for your insight.Your caution is well-taken and I think, as much as I hate to believe it (since it knocks me back a generation) I think you are really on to something here.
No, there is no proof there ever was an older Harvey YEATON.That was an assumption I made based on the 1810 census and the onomastics of the two families of Benjamin YEATON and Harvey YEATON in Lincoln Co, ME.
And while we're on the subject of assumptions, I am assuming that Benjamin b.1782 and Harvey b.1784 were brothers because both lived in Lincoln Co, ME, and both had sons named Harvey and daughters named Abigail. But it is still unproven that they are even related.
I did know that YEATON and EATON are prone to be used interchangably but I never saw any evidence of it in my own branch until you pointed out the marriage intention fo Harvey "Eaton" and Jane Clark.
I went back to the census and I found a Benjamin EATON in Bristol in 1810 with a small family that matches the family of my Benjamin YEATON in the 1820 Bristol census.I never really was comfortable with the idea of Benjamin living with his "father" in 1810, especially since he appears to have been married by 1805.
As you suggest, Harvey YEATON is probably not the father of either Benjamin or Harvey, since there is no Harvey YEATON (or EATON) in the 1790 or 1800 Maine census, and there probably would be if such a man existed and had two sons born in the 1780s.Nor is there any such Harvey in Massachusetts. And looking at the children of Benjamin and Harvey YEATON now, I see that neither man named either of his first two sons Harvey.
What is your take on the Jane YEATON buried in Alna Village Cemetery 7 Aug 1845?Both Benjamin and Harvey married women named Jane, but both of their wives seem to be alive in the 1850 census (Benjamin's wife in Bremen and Harvey's wife in Alna.)So who is this Jane YEATON who died in 1845?
Apparently, I need to start my hunt for Benjamin's father over again.Do you know anything about YEATON or EATON families active in Lincoln Co, ME in the late 1700s?
