There is a document called "The Yeatmans in America" written by Walter Clark Yeatman; Los Angeles, 1933. It contains a good bit of information in the Yeatman Family in the "states" up to that time. It states that the Yeatmans orginally located in Dorset County, England and the name is there found as far back as the Domesday Book, of the time of William the Conqueror. A partial record of the titled part of the English family, from 1450, is contained in the "History of Dorset" by J. Hutchins who gives credit to John Pym Yeatman for its compliation. Earliest record of a Yeatman immigrant to Virginia is that of William Yeatman, who was shipped by the Wm. Hampton Co. in 1651. No record of where setteled, but tradition handed down indicates original ancestor named William. Next Yeatman of definite record was Thomas Yeatman who died in York, Co Virginia in 1690; who might have been son of William the immigrant of 1651. I was always told that yeatman came from "Gate Man" or as you say gatekeeper. If you have a good copy of the Yeatman coat of arms, I'd be interested in getting one. I have a small photo-copy that is not very good.
