Dear Mary, Although I'm quite interested that your YATES family lived in Mercer County, Pennsylvania and were miners, unfortunately the odds are great that they are not related to my family from Camborne, Cornwall. It is a fairly uncommon name there while YATES is fairly common in other areas of England. Odds then are great that your YATES family is not from Cornwall. If I were you, I would gather possible candidates at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com and then proceed to see if you can locate them in the 1851 census in England. I spent some time trying to do that but wasn't successful but perhaps there would be some clue that you would appreciate that I did not. Then rule out or keep as possible as you get some information. That will be tedious. Finding an answer to Mary's maiden name perhaps in some US record would be fantastic and help you enormously in trying to locate their English marriage certificate. If you can find where they married, you'll be able to learn the names of their fathers and likely go back a couple more generations as English records are superior to US in that time period. I saw in two US censuses that one of the sons was born in Kentucky. Have you been able to pursue that lead? Any knowledge of where in Kentucky? Your YATES family hid from me in the 1860 and 1870 US census. Have you had better success at finding them? I am not aware of a William and Mary marriage in my own family in the time period you'd need (but I certainly don't know everything about my family!) Best wishes, Karen in Pennsylvania Notify Administrator about this message?
