Just fooling around with this, here is an interesting possibility:
Your couple in the 1881 New York census are young, with no children. Probably just married. Census was taken June 1 & 2.
From the website London GRO FreeBMD Index Search at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.plhttp://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.plI noticed a marriage between an Alfred Yates and a Margaret Bowen in the March quarter of 1881 in Birmingham, England.
There is a birth for an Alfred Hilton Yates in Liverpool in the March quarter of 1852, and a birth for a Margaret Bowen in Liverpool in the December quarter of 1856.
On the Castle Garden immigration website at http://www.castlegarden.org/http://www.castlegarden.org/there is an Alfred Yates, 27, arriving New York on April 26, 1881 on the ship Gallia. Unfortunately, there is no Margaret mentioned.
Where did their descendants end up?
