" Would it be true to say that there is a John Yates, grandfather to John P. Yates, and a father possibly named John Yates also?"
Just checked the microfilm of the 1840 census. For Rebecca Yeats, (same person as Rebecca Yates in 1850-Rebecca's Yates/Yeats' neighbors names are the same in many cases).
It shows the following:
1 Male between ages of 10-14.This matches John Yates who was 22 in 1850 census.
2 females between ages of 5-9.This matches Rachel (age 16 in 1850 census) and Mary Yates (age 18 in 1850 census) from the 1850 census.
1 female between ages 20-29. Not sure who this is.
1 female between ages 30-39. This matches the Susan Yates (age 42 in 1850)
1 female between ages 50-59.This must be Rebecca as she was 70 in the 1850 census. This census must have been taken earlier in the year than 1850 census.Rebecca was probably 59 when the 1840 census was taken.
What this tells us is that both Susan's and Rebecca's husbands' probably died prior to 1840.So the John Yeats in the 1840 census would not be are ancestor. This matches a Richmond County Estate record which lists a "John Yates (of Susan)" as being indebted to a man who died in 1840.
I'll look at the 1830 census and see what I can find there.
