Decatur County Journal-Iowa
Thursday, October 6, l92l
WILLIAM HENRY WISE was born April l3, l86l, in Decatur County, Iowa, and died Sept. 28, l92l, at his home in Decatur, Iowa, at the age of 60 years, 5 months and l5 days. His parents were WILLIAM and KATHARINE (YATES) WISE and he was the youngest of seven children, all of whom have passed away with the exception of one sister, MRS. SARAH SANGER.
December 2, l885, he was united in marriage to ELIZABETH A. DEVORE. To this union nine children were born, two of them having died in infancy. In the winter of l887, during a revival meeting conducted by Rev. Elijah Tillotson, at the Good Hope School House in Long Creek Township, he united with the Methodist Protestant Church and remained an active member of the same until it disbanded. During this time he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. After this congregation disbanded he transferred his membership to the Christian Church of Van Wert. Of this church he remained a member until his death.
He was also a member of the I.O.O.F.
He was born on a farm south of Leon, but when a very young man, moved with his parents to the farm in Long Creek Township, where he spent the active years of his life, raising his family there, and living there until ill health compelled him to retire in l9l6, when he moved to Decatur. He was a great sufferer but through all the months of pain, maintained his faith and trusted that all was for the best. He asked that the 2lst chapter and 4th verse of Rev. be used in the funeral service: "And he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore for the first things are passed away."
He left behind to mourn for him, his wife, who has so faithfully served and comforted him; four sons, WILLIAM GRANT, of St. Joseph, Mo.; FLOYD EARL, of Decatur, Iowa; FOREST HENRY and FRANK NEAL, of Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, MRS. NELLIE BARGER, of Los Angeles, California; MRS. DALE LOREY, of Des Moines, Iowa and MRS. GRACE WILEY, of Decatur, Iowa; ten grandchildren, one sister, MRS. SARAH E. SANGER, of Clarinda; three nieces, all of whom were present excepting one daughter, MRS. NELLIE BARGER, of Los Angeles, Calif., and one niece, MRS. ZORA BASSETT, of Monument, Colo. He also leaves a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church in Decatur by Rev. Esch, of Cainsville, Mo., September 30, l92l. Songs which had been requested by the deceased were rendered by a selected quartet. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery beside his children.
