I have a Yates line, but not your direct line, I just make suggestions when I think I might be able to help.I have mine back to 1700s in NC; they make their way through several states, ending up in TX, where the surname marries out.
I'm sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The computerized index only begins in 1962, so anyone who died prior to 1962 won't show up on the that index. But, people applied for their Soc Sec cards in the mid 1930s.Here is the site for SSDI, just type in surname and given name (leave middle blank) and all the Everett Yates will come up, you will find your father and grandfather.Note, death year for your grandfather is 1968:

You might post your query on the county forums, too. And, try the GenWeb counties, also. This website will bring you to the U.S. level, choose state, and then county/counties within those states.http://usgenweb.comhttp://usgenweb.com
I do not see a Rantoulle in IL, but there is a Rantoul, if that is the correct town, it is in Champaign Co, IL.You might begin with that GenWeb county site, some of your "cousins" may be searching out there, too.
Fernald might be a family surname in your tree.A mother's, or grantmother's maiden name??
Your grandfather's death certificate should show the names of his parents, with that info you could look for the family on the 1900 census (and 1910 & 20).This would give you names of siblings of your grandfather and help you expand on finding your cousins, too.Happy Hunting.
