I too am descended from William STEWART d. 1834 Bedford Co., TN, (my 5th great-grandfather) buried 1834 in Greer Cemetery (aka Sugar Creek Cemetery) Bedford Co., TN & Margaret YATES, b. 1774 in Wilks Co. (?) NC, d. ? Bedford Co., TN, also buried in Greer Cemetery -- m. December 29, 1791 in Madison Co., KY. Children: Martha Eleanor STEWART b. 3/1/1806 (my 4th great-grandmother), Joshua STEWART b. ?, and John V. STEWART b. Abt. 1815.
From the Land of Wilkes by Johnson J. Hayes, published 1962, Joshua YATES was suspected of being loyal to Great Britain during the Revolution. In Sept. 1779, the County Court of Wilkes order the confiscation of all property belonging to several men though to be Loyalists and the property of Joshua YATES was among them.
I found a land grant in the NC Dept Archives for Joshua YATES, Ashe County, NC, Ref. File #12.14.28.119, Name #119, Date 1800 & 1801.
I'm still searching as I've only stumbled onto the YATES connection to my family.
I'd love to hear from you about your connection to William STEWART and the YATES family.
Best Regards,
Beverly Glath
