With a great deal of help from some very talented, and generous, women in Freeport Illinois, I recently obtained some Yarrow and Redhead information that I’d like to post in hopes that it will lead to other connections. The 8 June, 1885 Freeport (Illinois) Daily Bulletin states that “Jane Yarrow and daughter Eliza have arrived here from England to make this City their home. Mrs. Yarrow is the sister of Mrs. F. Crowden.” A later article (obituary) in the 28 Feb, 1899 Freeport Daily Journal lists Jane’s death, in Freeport, as the previous day (27 Feb, 1899) at the age of 67. The article contains the following information : 1) native of Whittlesey, Cambridge, England; 2) mother of 12 children, five of whom survive her; 3) surviving children are Sarah Jane, George and Odey in England. Alfred Yarrow (my great grandfather born in Smethwick on 5 Feb. 1866) in Denver Colorado, and Mrs. George Smith (formerly Eliza Yarrow) of Freeport Illinois; 4) Also listed was Jane’s sister, Mrs. Henrietta (Harriet?) Crowden. Jane was a member of the First M.E. (Methodist) church. A separate article in the Freeport Daily Bulletin, same date, states that Jane’s husband, William, died “several years ago”. This article lists the surviving children as Sarah, Jane and Odey in England as well as Alfred Yarrow and Mrs. George Smith in the US. Along with information I’ve been collecting for the past few years, these newspaper accounts have provided me with some final bits of information to make the following conclusions. William Merry Yarrow married Jane Redhead on 28 February 1848. The “entry of marriage” lists Jane’s father as John Redhead (a carpenter), and William’s father as John Bennett Yarrow (a Tailor). The witnesses were Fearry (sp) and Harriet Crowden (see above). From other information I have collected I believe that William’s mother may have been Sarah Merry. I believe Jane’s mother may also have been a Mary but I am unsure of the last name (possibly Gamble or Wilson). It is very possible that when William Merry Yarrow’s parents were married, the last name was listed as Yarrell. Information from the Cambridgeshire Family History Society lists a marriage for John Yarrell and Sarah Merry on 20 October 1813. Other information listed in the parish registers list Yarrell, signs Yarrow. If anyone needs further information, or can make any connection to these individuals, I’d appreciate hearing from you. I also have some unidentified photos taken in the late 1800's in Smethwick and Birmingham. Notify Administrator about this message?
