Hi to all Yardley researchers,
The transcript below is of the legal deed enabling Thomas Yardley to sort out the affairs of his dead relatives in Bucks county. After, I clarify some details about these Yardleys and the places mentioned, as I’ve seen so many incorrect entries on many genealogies on the internet. The deed was with the original sale deed from William Penn, co signed by eminent lawyer Thomas Rudyard, whose family lived some 3 miles from the Yardleys, near Rudyard lake. This is where writer Rudyard Kipling got his name from.
“This is to certify to all and every person and persons whom it may concern that we, Thomas Baddeley, Mayor of Newcastle Under Lyme, and Thomas Fenton , deputy town clerk of the said Borough, now present at the Sealings of a deed being dated the twentieth day of January in the year of the reigne of our gracious Sovereign Lady Ann, by the Grace of God, of England, Scotland, France and Ireland Queen, defender of the faith, the year 1704/5; and made between Thomas Yardley the elder of Birches in the parish of Horton and County of Stafford in the Kingdom of England, and Samuel Yardley of Heath house in the said parish of Horton, Miller, eldest son of the said Thomas Yardley of the one part; and Thomas Yardley the younger, late of Birches aforesaid, but now of the City of Philadelphia in the province of Pensilvania, of the younger sons of the said Thomas Yardley the elder; Samuel Carpenter of the same city, merchant; Richard Hough of the City of Bucks in the said province, and Robert Heath of the County of Philadelphia in the said province, and of the other part. And that now did see the said deed signed, sealed and delivered by the aforesaid Thomas Yardley and did indorse our names on the back therefore as witnesses thereof. In witness thereof we have hereto severally subscribed our names and the said Mayor hath affixed and set the Common Seals of the said borough, dated the twentieth day of January, year 1704, and in the third year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Queen Ann over England.”
All the punctuation is mine as there is none on the original. This Newcastle was the main market town in the area, on the main trunk road to north west England and Scotland. The farmhouse of Birches must be what is now Silver Birches, as the parish layout is virtually identical to 300 years ago. Heath house is still there, on the bluff just above Dairyhouse where the extended Yardley family lived previously. They are all about ¾ mile apart. Thomas junior was baptised 19th Feb. 1676 at Horton, mother Jane. Had at least six siblings. Father Thomas died in Feb. 1712, aged about 74. Senior also had an uncle Thomas, with one line of ancestry going back to William Longspere. That’s the two foot broad sword knights trained with daily.
Robert Heath, quaker, formerly of Tean, and born in Kingsley, with ONLY one brother John, of Richard and Alice, had come to Bucks county in 1700.
