Hi Karen,
I'm pretty certain James must be from one of three Yardleys, Richard, Samuel and Benjamin, possibly brothers or cousins , who are listed in a Sept. 1790 petition from Rutherford county, North Carolina. The christian names are the same ones as in the North Staffordshire, England families, and of those of the 1704 immigrant brothers, Thomas and Richard Yardley (or Yeardley), to Bucks county. You will find the same names in their children. They both died around 1760.
You will find much more about the English background in my postings (esp. Eardley historical notes) on eardley.org. and this site.
bye - pete in Yardley homeland
