Referring to james L Smith (1999) details, i can clarify accuracy of locations as i live close. This area of north staffs is narrow valleys dropping down to the Cheshire plain. His father's marriage to alice morton, refers to Little Moreton hall, an elizabethan black/white manor house now owned by National trust, 30 miles south of mancheter airport.Son william married into landed gentry at lawton hall, 3miles south of moreton.(See familysearch for 1881 uk census of wlliam lawton's vast number servants in cheshire.) Old maps show ranscliffe a mile from lawton; now called ravenscliffe in kidsgrove. (Will junior's home. )Its famous for the 1776 canal tunnel under the hill funded by Josiah Wedgewood (whose family also came from same valleys). Rushton spencer valley is a few miles away outside Leek, and was partly owned by yardley family until recently. Many Yardley graves in neighbouring parish of Horton and next Norton in moors. These are ancestors of my maternal side. Also note that the Stoddards of Boston come from Rushton in 1600's. Reference to brother ralph refers to Alderley edge 12 miles north of moreton, but cannot trace Caldecote except near to the original Yardley village(now a birmingham suburb). This ralph got a monopoly on soaps/ fragrances from the king and was founding of famous company. Of interest might be that the old saxon village of 1000years ago was pronounced YER-LEE,ENDING UP AS YARDLET(worcs). Local accents obviously have some connection to yeardley spelling. Also interesting but irrelevant were the large number of Crockett families in north staffs 600 years ago. peter dzik , england Notify Administrator about this message?
