Teresa,
I cannot add anything to the black dutch legend in your family. However, I did want to share my own experience with you as it is another avenue to consider.
In my Yarbrough line, the family legend was that the Yarbroughs were Irish. It was a strong legend and held by most of the members of my Yarbrough family. Yet, no amount of research seemed to bear that out. I managed to get the line back to Richard Yarbrough, the immigrant, and still all the Yarbrough ties were to England.
However, I did find that one of my early Yarbrough ancestors married Elizabeth Dowd (O'Dowd). From what I can gather, her parents came from Ireland. She, too, may have been born in Ireland, but I've found no proof of that.
To make a long search short, I found there was indeed an Irish line in my Yarbrough family, but it was from the maternal side rather than the paternal (Yarbrough) side.
I have no idea if this may be the case in your family. I am familiar with your Yarbrough line and if we can ever connect Shem to Joshua, I believe that line will also go directly to Richard Yarbrough, the immigrant -- which will definitely be an English line. But, perhaps there was a marriage that will link you to the Black Dutch line.
I've found that the family legends usually contain small grains of truth -- which is why I am sharing this.

Karen
