Hi Tammy

Thanks for posting the book's information on Matilda. That
mostly agrees with my family history, except we have her
born about 1825, and that she was part Cherokee. Our
history also says she had a brother John who later was a
ferryboat operator on the Mississippi.

I have just about convinced myself that I have found
Matilda's parents. I think they were George Weaver +
Matilda Pryer.

There was only one Weaver family in Wilson Co TN for the
1820 census:

George Weaver 100010 20010 [1 M <10, 1 M 26-45, 2 F <10, 1 F 26-45]

George is nowhere to be found on the 1830 census, which is
consistent with stories of Matilda being an orphan. There
are no Weavers at all in Wilson Co on the 1830 census.

The 1840 census has only one Weaver family in Wilson Co:

Adam Weaver 2 M <5, 1 M 30-40, 1 F 20-30

Obviously that can't be Matilda's father. He also doesn't
match the young son of George from 1820. I think he is
probably an unrelated family who happened to move into the
county later.

But the Yandells were clearly in Wilson Co all the way from
1820 to 1850. Thomas K married Matilda in 1841. Where was
she up until then?

As I was looking at the census entries for the Yandells, I
had a brainstorm. Here is Thomas' father James on the 1830
census:

1830 census Wilson Co TN p108
James Yandal 2 M 10-15, 1 M 15-20, 1 M 20-30, 1 M 60-70,
1 F <5, 1 F 15-20, 1 F 30-40, 1 F 50-60
[x, James 14, Thomas 18, William 21, James 65, x, x, x, Mary 54]

I have wondered who those additional people are. Suddenly
it hit me: They are the Weavers. The young male matches
George's son; the youngest female matches Matilda; the
next-youngest female matches one of George's daughters from
1820; the middle-age female matches George's wife. George's
oldest daughter could easily have married before 1830.

The 1840 census entry for James is consistent:

1840 census Wilson Co TN p244
James Yandle 1 M 30-40, 1 M 50-60, 1 F 15-20, 1 F 60-70
[Thomas 29?, James 75?, x, Mary 64]

[There is a mark in the column for M 20-30, but it is
crossed out. Thomas should have been 29 as of the official
census date.]

The unidentified female matches Matilda.

So this would be the scenario: George dies 1827-ish. His
family moves in with the Yandells. The oldest daughter
marries 1829-ish. The others are enumerated with the
Yandells in 1830. Between 1830 and 1840 George's wife dies
and the other two children marry. Matilda remains with the
family for the 1840 census and then marries Thomas in 1841.

The only sticking point is that my family history says
Matilda was raised by an aunt after her parents died. I
don't see how the James' wife could be Matilda's aunt.
Perhaps she was really a great-aunt. Until I find George
Weaver's ancestry I can't confirm or deny this. Or it could
just be that my family history is muddled, and Matilda was
raised by her future in-laws, not an aunt. But I still have
to wonder just why the Yandells did take in the Weavers if
they weren't related.

I sure wish I could find some vital records from Wilson Co
for that time period. And I'd be interested in whatever new
information your cousin might have.

Ken
