I have a quandry.

My GGrandfather was Richard Yancey Smith. He was married to Martha Peterson. His father was Robert M. Smith. My Richard was born in 1859/60 depending on which source you believe. He was born in Johnson County Illinois, near Vienna.

Here is the problem. There is another Richard Y. Smith in Vienna, he is married to Mahala Yancey. He is 30 Years older than my Richard. He has some brothers, Thomas, Issac, and William. My Richard has some brothers, Thomas, Issac, and William.

There is no doubt in my mind they are related. As my aunt used to tell me about how we were related to some "Kentucky Colonel" named Austin Yancey, and that our lines connected with Jefferson Davis.

I have been trying this backdoor approach, but hit the same dead end. Who was Robert M. Smith? All I know about him is that he married Nancy Bowen(Brown?)

Have you seen Robert M. Smith connected to any of your Smiths in the Yancey searches you have done.?

This is driving me nuts.
