How is Mary H. Yancey Graves related to Penelope Caroline Yancey, dau. of Joel Yancey and Elizabeth Rebecca Hagey? Penelope Caroline Yancey m. Absolam W. McCaulley.

My 3X great grandmother was Mary H. Yancey Graves, b. ca. 1805 NC, d. aft. 1880 Antioch Community, White Co., AR. She married John Graves ca. 1829, probably Fayette Co., TN. John Graves, b. TN died 1841 in Fayette Co.

Her children were Philip Yancey Graves, b. 8 Oct 1830 TN; Julia A. Graves, b. 1834 TN; John W. Graves, b. 1840 TN; Unknown Graves.

Mary is found with Philip, Julia and John on the 1850 12th Civil Dist., Fayette Co., TN.

On the 1860 Saulsbury Twp., Tippah Co., MS census, Mary Yancey Graves is living with her brother-in-law, Ralph Graves, and her children, Julia Ann, John W. and James R. Hollis and A. H. Barton.

The next HH is Absolam W. McCaulley, his wife Penelope Caroline Yancey McCaulley, children Louisia, Mary Ann, Joel, G. Ann and Bartlett Yancey, age 16, b. TN. Bartlett is probably the son of Alfred Yancey, Penelope Caroline Yancey McCaulley's brother. Penelope was a widow on the 1870 Salem PO., Tippah Co., MS census, with her dau. G. Ann.

In 1870 Mary Yancey Graves is in Marshall Co., MS with her brother-in-law, Ralph Graves, and her son, John W., his wife, Nancy and their son Phillip H. Yancey. James D. Birdsong is also in the HH. He later m. Martha Bounds.

By 1880 the Mary Yancey Graves is in the HH of her son, Philip Yancey Graves, who had moved to White Co., AR by 1870. Philip Yancey Graves m. Elizabeth Tingle Hollis, widow of Joseph Hollis, between 1850 and 1857. The Birdsongs remained neighbors through the 1900's.

When he was fifteen, Philip Yancey Graves began working on a tract of timber land, which his father had held a claim, by clearing the timber and making it into shingles and clapboards, for which he found a market at Somerville, Macon, Moscow and other places. In 1855, Philip Graves and Joseph Hollis bought some cypress timber near La Grange, TN, which made into shingles and sold for use at the academy and college being built at that time. He followed this occupation in Shelby and Hardeman Counties, but in 1857 he moved to Tippah Co., MS.

The Graves/Yancey family was in Fayette Co., TN during the same era as Joel Chandler Yancey, who died 1851 in Fayette Co. Researchers indicate Joel C. Yancey had a dau., Mary Ann Yancey, b. abt. 1814 NC; d. 1844 Fayette Co., TN. She m. George W. Witt. My Mary H. (Hagey ?) Yancey Graves was b. 1805 NC. It was not unusual for families to duplicate their children's names.

I would like to hear from anyone who has ideas on Mary H. Yancey Graves's parents.
