There was a Francis Winn in Jasper County, GA in the very early 1800s. I know this because my last proven ancestor, James Edwards, is named in a lawsuit with him against some other people. They are as follows:
Winn, Francis, James Edwards, Peter Douglass and John Douglass vs John Allen
Winn, Francis and James Edwards vs. John Armstrong
Winne, Francis vs Larkin Clark
I have no idea what they are about; however, I plan to go to the GA Archives soon to look them up to see if they provide me with any clues as to the relationship of James Edwards to Francis Winn.
I have the only books that have been written recording deeds from Jasper Co., GA (they cover only deed books 1, 2, 3, and 4) and Francis Winn is also linked to James Edwards there. From Deed Book 1, Page 264: Seller: Frances Wynn of Randolph County (Jasper Co. was first Randolph Co. and had name changed to Jasper Co. in maybe 1812); Buyer: James Edwards; Date Sold: 3/9/1809; Date Sale was Recorded in Randolph County: 3/9/1809; Negro man named Peter, about 30 years old.
He is only mentioned two times, and both have to do with the Negro named Peter. The second one is from Deed Book 1, page 300; Seller: Francis Wynn; Buyer: John Allen; Sales Price: $400; Witness: W. Whatley; Date Sold 12/25/1808; Date Recorded in Randolph County: 4/6/1809; A Negro boy named Peter.
It would seem that at least one of the lawsuits is about this transaction. There are other Winn/Wynn/etc. in Jasper County also.
There is another book, Records of Jasper County, GA and that is where I found the information about the lawsuits. A lot of other Wynnes (spelled various ways) are mentioned in the index of this book. The actual records are not in the book. What the author of the book did was go to the GA Archives and look up every record from Jasper Co., GA and list it in the book. To find the actual record, you would have to either order it from the GA Archives or go there to look. I will be glad to share what I learn
