I recently located online the book by Sir John Wynne "The History of the Gwydir Family" (http://digidol.llgc.org.uk/METS/HTG00001/frames?div=185&subdiv=0&locale=en&mode=reference) which he began writing during his lifetime and which was finished by others, finally being published in 1770.
In this book there is a listing in the back of the book of the children of Sir John Wynne and Sydney Gerard. There is a Robert Wynne among those children, but he is listed as having died unmarried.
There is also a listing of the children of Maurice Wynne, Sir John's father.Sir John was the eldest son, followed by Richard, Ellis and Robert (all by Maurice's 1st wife). This Robert Wynne married Catherine Lloyd, daughter of David Lloyd.
In addition, there is also a listing of the children of John ap Meredith (Sir John's grandfather). He also had a son named Robert, but he is listed as Robert Wynne of Conway and this Robert married Dorothy Griffith, daughter of William Griffith.
Mayor Robert Wynne may have been related to Sir John Wynne, but he was not his son or his brother.Mayor Robert Wynne, per Deloris Wynne-Riley's research in Canterbury, was born in Shrewsbury in 1558/1559 which would make him 5-6 years younger than Sir John Wynne whom the Wikipedia says was born in 1553 and died March 1, 1627; therefore, Mayor Robert Wynne can NOT be Sir John Wynne's son, nor does it seem likely that Mayor Robert Wynne was his brother.
Perhaps Mayor Robert Wynne was related to Sir John as Llanwrst (the town near Sir John's home, Gwydir Castle) is only about 70-80 miles from Shrewsbury, but the relationship would have to be through an uncle of Sir John's or a great-uncle, etc.
We know that Mayor Robert Wynne married Frances Watmer (whose family also originated in Shropshire or Old Salop County) because in the will which he dictated from his deathbed in 1609 Robert named "William Wattmer his brother as his overseer".This is how they referred to their in-laws at that time.
A good article to read about William Watmer and his care of the orphaned children of Robert Wynne and Frances Watmer is "A Mayor of Canterbury: William Watmer, the Children's Friend", by Dorothy Gardiner, F.S.A., published in 1948 in Archaeologia Cantiana -Vol. 61.Ms. Gardiner was mistaken in her assertion that Robert Wynne, the son of Peter Wynne, died before his father did, but that is the only problem I have with her information (unless there was another child named Robert who died young). This article gives the names of all five of Robert and Frances' children as well as some information about what became of them in later life.
I don't know if this article can be found online.I haven't been successful at finding it online thus far, but I did receive a copy of it from a cousin and it is well worth reading.
Another source of information on the Watmer family and on the Denne family (family of Mary Denne [paternal grandmother of Martha Coppin, wife of Peter Wynne]) is the Visitation of Kent, 1619 which can also be found online. Also, Burke's Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland has a great deal of information on the Dennes.
