Deloris,I can't find the message where you had asked about the correct lineage of Thomas Winn b.1724 and I am going to share with you what I have on both of the Thomas Winn/Wynne's that you mentioned.
Thomas Winn, son of Col. William Wynne is the father to my ggg grandfather, Thomas Marion Winn.My lineage is posted on Ancestry.com and is called "My Extended Family".I don't know for sure, but it might be accessable through my e-mail which is [email protected]
Here is what I have compiled from various records and sources over the past 28 years of Winn/Wynne research.
Maj. Joshua Wynne, Sr. (b.20 Mar 1663 Jordan's Parish, Charles City, VAd.29 Mar 1715 Prince George Co., VA) m1)6 Jul 1685 Charles City Co., VAMary Frances Jones (b.1668 Charles City Co., VAd. 4 May 1719 Henrico Co., VA) she was the d/o Maj. Peter Jones & Margaret Wood. After the death of Joshua Wynne, she married William Randolph.
Joshua Wynne & Mary Frances Jones had the following children:
1. Maj. Joshua Wynne, Jr. (b.1690 Charles City Co., VAd. aft 1738 Prince George Co., VA) He m)1716 toMary Sloman (or was her maiden name Hix??)
2. Capt. Peter Wynne(b. ca 1694 Jordan's Parish, CC, VA d.1736 Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., VA) He m1)Frances Alexander Anderson of New Kent Co., VA and m2)Miss Hill
3. Margaret Wynne (b. 1696 CC, VAd.12 Jan 1723 Prince George, VA) she m)1710 Edward Goodrich (1693-1720)
4. ***Col. William Wynne ( (b. ca 1699-1705 at Monks Creek, Prince George,VAd.26 NOV 1778 Danville, Pittsylvania, VA) ***see below
5. Francis Wynne (b.1700 CC, VAd.1774 Pittsylvania Co., VA) m)Miss Hamelin
6. Mary Wynne (b.1689CC, VAd.1725 Henrico Co., VA) m)1712 Henrico Co., VA to Capt. John Worsham (b.1654 Conjurors Neck, Henrico, VAd. 1729 Bermuda Hundred, Henrico, VA)
7. Robert Wynne (b. 1705 CC, VA)m) Frances Mason
***Col. William Wynne (b. ca 1699-1705 at Monks Creek, Prince George,VAd.26 NOV 1778 Danville, Pittsylvania, VA) He m) Frances Reade 1714 at Prince George Co., VA (she survived him, but I have no other dates for her)The majority of these Wynne's went by the newer spelling of Winn. They had the following children that were all born in the same place, and depending on who you speak to, they'll each recite a different place, when in reality, they were all actually the same place at one time or another. 'They' being Lunenburg, Brunswick, or Pittsylvania Co., VA:
1. **Thomas Wynne, Sr. (b.1724d.Bef 7 APR 1795 Wilkes Co., GA)m] Mary Echols
2. John Wynne, Sr. (b.14 DEC 1726d. 12 FEB 1795 Lunenburg Co., VA)m1]?m2] 7 MAY 1767Anne Stone
3. Robert Wynne(b.1728d.ca 22 APR 1811
4. Capt. William Wynne ( b. 10 AUG 1729d. 8 JUL 1808Tazewell Co., VA)m1]Cynthia Mary Harmonm2] Phyllis Marrs
5. Margaret Wynne(b. 1730d. Aft 2 JAN 1797 Dublin, Laurens,GA)m] Humphrey Hendricks
6. Elizabeth 'Betsey' Wynne (b. 1732d. 1778 Pittsylvania Co., VA)m] Moses Echols
7. Mary Wynne(b. 1733)m]Thomas Wynne
8. Martha Frances (b. 1734d.Aft 1808Caswell, NC)m]Henry Dixon
**Thomas Winn, Sr. m) Mary Echols (b.1734 of Halifax, VAd.1800 Wilkes Co., GA)They were married at Halifax Co., VA in 1745.This date is a problem because it makes Mary Echols only 12 years old.Although it's possible, I just don't think it's probable. My first thought is that I don't have the right birth year for Mary.Since I don't have the birth dates for any of her siblings, then it's hard to know.I suspect the 1734 was a guess.Mary Echol's mother, Catherine 'Caty' Evans was born in 1718.If she started having children as young as 15, the first would have been born 1733.I have a list of 11 children for Richard Echols & Catherine 'Caty' Evans, Mary being 4th in line. She would have had to be the first born if these dates are to be believed. If anyone has the birthdates for the children of Richard Echols & Caty Evans, I would love to have them.
The children I have for Thomas Winn & Mary Echols are:
1. Col. John Winn (b.9 JAN 1746 Halifax, VA d.4 MAY 1820 Clark's Creek, Wilkes Co., GA) m1) 23 NOV 1772 Brunswick Co., VA to Mary Lyallm2)10 NOV 1808 Elbert Co., GA to Jane _______, widow of Nathan Childs.
2. Mary Christian 'Kity' Winn(b. Halifax, VA)m)John Bolton
3. Sarah Patricia Winn(b. Halifax, VA) m)Levi Marshall
4. Francis Winn, male child that I know no more of
5. Obediah Wynne, Sr. (b.1752-1764 Halifax, VAd. 1801 Wilkes Co., GA) He m1) 4 MAR 1786 Caswell Co., NC to Oney Bolton ( d. bef 1799 Wilkes Co., GA)m2) ca 1799 Lucy R. Terry (b.1767 Halifax, VA)
6. Rhoda Winn m)William Arnold
7. Lucy Winn m)William Booker
8. Thomas Marion Winn (b.1766 VAd. 1834-1850 Gwinnett Co., GA) m)4 JAN 1806 at Washington, Wilkes, GA to Nancy Agee (b. 1792 Buckingham Co., VAd. aft 1860 probably at Harrison, Hamilton, TN)She was the d/o Joshua Hawkes Agee & Sarah Ann Bondurant.
There is no doubt that the son of Col. William Wynne & Frances Reade is Thomas Wynne, Sr. and he often went by the spelling of Winn which is how my maiden name was spelled. This family went to Richmond & Wilkes Co., GA and most of them settled in Wilkes Co.The youngest son, Thomas Marion Winn is my ancestor.
These are my notes for Thomas Winn (1725-1795):
SOURCE:Leonard M. Wynne1008 Laurel AvenueSouth Pittsburg, TN 37380423-837-7388, he has sent an outline of the Robert Wynne family that I have extracted various items from.
EXPL:His father, Col.William Winn/Wynne of Pittsylvania Co., VA made Deed of Gift to him and his wife in his will dated 8 Oct 1777 and proved in Pittsylvania Co., 26 Mar 1778.Also, Deed of Gift was made their children, mentioned as John, Francis, Pattie & Sallie.
LAND:Deed Bk AA 1785-1787, p.80 William Duke and wife Winniford of Wilkes Co.,GA to Thomas Wynne of Richmond Co.,GA. 350 acres according to original grant 1785 to said Duke.11 May 1785. Stephen & Thomas Johnson, Obediah Wynne, test.About 1762, Thomas Wynne received almost 3,000 acres of land on both sides of Hounds Creek and also on the southern branches of Tucking Creek adjoining the land of Richard Stone (Lunenburg Co. Patent Book 33, p.1047, 7 Aug.1761). Twice in the following year Thomas Wynne sold some of this particular land to John Winn (surname spelled Winn in both cases and both described as "of Lunenburg County"; Lunenburg Deed Book 7, p.231, 8 Apr.1762 and p.338, 30 Jul.1762).
RES:Thomas Winn/Wynne with his brother, John Winn is said to have remained in Lunenburg Co., VA near the Brunswick line instead of moving with his father's family when they moved to what became Pittsylvania Co.,VA.It is believed that Thomas Winn came to Richmond Co., Georgia about 1782/5 after the Revolution. Then to Wilkes Co.,GA
WILL:Early Records of Wilkes Co., GA Vol 1; p.68, Record of Wills 1792 - 1801, p.157 - Wynn, Thomas. "far advanced in life" To wife Mary all the land where I now live. If she dies before the two daughters Rhodea and Lucy marry, they to have it with son Thomas Wynn, To wife Mary 6000 pounds of tobacco in possession of Dickson & Bostick, Inspectors. To son Obediah the land on which he lives. Wife Mary, son Obediah and Sanders Walker, Excrs. Signed Aug 29, 1789. Probated Apr 7, 1795. Abraham Tyson, William Best, Samuel Freeman, James Scurlock, Test.
These are my notes for Thomas Marion Winn (1766 - 1834/50):
MARR:Washington, Georgia Newspaper "The Monitor", pub. 18 Jan 1806 in Washington County, GA listed the marriage of "Thomas Winn and Miss Agee, both of Wilkes County."
CENSUS:1820 Burke Co.,NC M33-83
RES:Sometime after Apr. 1830 they moved from Burke Co., NC to Gwinnett Co., GA.
CENSUS:1850 Gwinnett Co.,GA lists Nancy Winn and the two youngest children, George W. and Clemmon Q. Winn. They live not too far from son, John Winn and family.Thomas is not on this census, although we cannot find a death record for him.
EXPL:Several times I have found this, but I am not sure where the original source is: "Thomas Wynne's second son Thos.Wynne,Jr. was left very rich by his father, but alas-he was a drunkard and a gambler who married into a very low family, spent his property in a few years and then went over seas to some foreign land. His family lived in the upper part of Georgia. He had one daughter who married a man by the name of J.Brand, and two of his daughters married two brothers named Fincher. I know little more of the family." This fits to be our Thomas Winn. I first came across this story from Mildred Winn of Homer, LA. She is an avid searcher and I respect her data.
EXPL:Wyndell Taylor has some copies of letters written about 1915-1918 that mention one of the Winn daughters married a man by the name of J.Brand, and the writer having heard from Rebecca and Jane.
OCCUP:Bondsman
Thanks, Laura
