Dear Deloris,
I'd like to share some new information concerning Joseph Wynne of Prince George County. It has struck me that there has been some confusion in determining which records of Prince George County are those of Joseph Wynne and which are Joshua Wynne's.
For example, in the Bristol Parish Register the birth listings look like this:
Martha born 1720-1 to "Joss and Mary Wynne"
Joss born 1722 to "Joss and Mary Wynne"
Margaret born 1724 to "Joss and Mary Wynne"
Thomas born 1726 to "Joseph and Mary Wyn"
Tabitha born 1731 to "Joshua and Mary Wynne"
Sloman born 1745 to "Joshua and Mary Wynne"
Although some of these births have been attributed to Joshua, I think the children born to "Joss" are children of Joseph. "Joss" is a nickname of Joseph that has fallen out of use.
To get more answers about Joseph Wynne, I examined a number of land patents, beginning with the 153 acres tract you mentioned. The 153 patent on Stony Creek "beginning in Richard Jones lines" is written" to Jos. Wynne."The 1715 survey of that land, according to Surveys 1710-1742 p. 20-21,To “Joseph Wynne,” survey of “153 acres on both sides of Stony Creek,”October 1715.
There is a patent to Robert Wynne which mentions brother, Joseph: 15 October 1741, “...unto Robert Wynne Gentleman... containing two hundred and thirty four acres lying in the county of Prince George on the south side of Stony Creek, to wit, beginning in his own lines where Cap. Joseph Wynne’s falls on the same thence along his own line west...along his own line to Smith’s line...inwards thence east one hundred and twelve poles to Capt. Joseph Wynne’s line...” - transcribed from patent holdings of the Library of Virginia by Stephanie Miller.
Here is an abstract of another patent to Joseph which mentions brother, Robert:
16 September 1740, “unto Joseph Wynne...four hundred acres of land...on the south side of Stony Creek adjoining his own and his brother Robert’s lines...beginning at his said Robert’s corner at a Wolf Pit...thence...to Capt. Richard Jones line...thence...to Robert Jones line...,” transcribed from patent holdings of the Library of Virginia by Stephanie Miller.
....And a deed abstract for Robert in 1728:
28 September 1728, “...unto Robert Wynne Jun. of Prince George County one certain tract or parcel of land containing three hundred and sixty nine acres lying and being on the south side of Nottoway River in the county of Brunswick aforesaid and bounded as followeth (to wit) beginning at Capt. Richard Jones’s upper corner on the river,” transcribed from patent holdings of the Library of Virginia by Stephanie Miller.
If Robert was the son of Joshua Wynne and Mary Jones, then Joseph must be the son of Joshua Wynne (perhaps by a first wife). Joseph Wynne was listed as captain of militia of dragoons in Charles City, 1701, so he was old enough to be Joshua's son by an earlier marriage.
I know all this upsets the apple cartconcerning Joshua Wynne and Joseph Wynne. I was very surprised myself by what I found. The orginal deeds may be examined online at the Library of Virginia electronic database: Northern Neck Grants.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Miller
