Hi there Peter,
I don't know if you are still checking this board but I will add my two pence worth anyway.
As you can see I am a Guihen. My father comesfrom Roscommon. There are a huge amount of Guihens and variants of the name to be found in a coal mining region called Arigna on the Leitrim - Roscommon - Sligo border. From what I have been told from my grandparents etc. the Guihens and the variants of that name (you'll have to excuse the fact that I keep implying that Guihen is the primary source of the variants - it is my name after all!) changed to Wynne due to the fact that the English could not pronouce Guihen when they went over to work while there was no work to be found in Ireland. Even in Ireland very few people have heard the name and growing up here I have come to accept it as the norm that people will spell the name with any letter other than the right one. I have seen people write Gweenahan. Where in god's name did they get that??? Anyway, there are several people in Arigna who would be perfect to talk t because they know the whole history of the name but you would want to act fast on it and not leave it for a few years because the best people to talk to are getting quite old. I am a teenager living i Meath so I am quite out of touch with the whole story. Maybe you might be interested in the website of the bar in the area. www.minersbar.com
I would like to hear from you if any of this is new to you.
