Quite some time ago a woman in Louisiana spun me a tale that has bothered me for many years now. Her husband's name was Brewer, but it was claimed by the family that their original name was Wynkoop, and that their ancestor, Henry (Wynkoop) Brewer had deserted during the Civil War and moved to Texas, where he lived out the rest of his life. I've been unable to confirm this story because I've never found any record of a Wynkoop-Brewer connection. Until now. This record, a marriage, from "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey," Volume 37, page 33, may be the one that I'm looking for: Jacob WINCKOOP married to Elizabeth BREWER January 22, 1825 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Neither Jacob, nor Elizabeth appear in any of the Wynkoop Genealogies that I know about, (and I run the Wynkoop Family Research Library), so I'm hoping that someone out there may have run across them in a source I'm not aware of. I haven't investigated the New Jersey census records for 1830 and 1840, so I don't know if Jacob's name appears there or not. It would be nice to know if these two had any sons who might be the Henry (Wynkoop) Brewer that I'm still looking for. One thought that does come to mind is that Jacob may be a descendant of the Wynkoops who moved to Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1717. One of Garret Wynkoop's sons, Philip Wynkoop, married a Monmouth County, N.J. girl, Margaret Covenhoven, so it's just possible that Jacob is one of their descendants. There are a couple of unnamed children of theirs listed in the Abington Presbyterian Church baptismal records, sex unknown, who might fill the bill. Assuming that Jacob was 25 when he got married, (the average age for men to marry back then), he would have been born about 1800 and Elizabeth Brewer would have been born around 1805, (assuming her to be the usual age of 20 when she tied the knot.) Any help you could give me in solving this problem, or even determining Jacob and/or Elizabeth's parentage would be an immense help. Hoping to hear from you. All my best, Chris Wynkoop Notify Administrator about this message?
