Murder of William Vaughan Williams [1869-1899]

Billy Williams [1869-1899] was 30 years old when he was murdered near the Kendall Tie Camp above Cora, WY. There is a marker placed by the Sublette Co. Historical Board at the grave site just south of the Kendall Forest Service area that notes: "Tie Camp 1885-1905. Seven Dead, Bert Glines killed buy a tree 1903, Billy Williams, Shot to Death, Two infants, Barnhart Twins and 3 others unknown"

Billy Williams is my great uncle. I have researched his life and death and believe his remains were buried in Viola Cemetery located about 11 miles from LaBarge, WY up LaBarge Creek. According to Herman Genetti in his book, "Herman's Howlings" Retta A. Elston/Williams arranged to have Billy's body removed from the cemetery 22 miles N. of Cora to Viola Cemetery near her relatives home in the Spring of 1900. Herman believes a Graves Registration Project conducted by the WPA during the 1930's placed Billy's grave near the center of the N. boundry of Viola Cemetery. Any information concerning Retta A. Elston or what county the Viola Cemetery is in please let me know. LaBarge appears to be in Lincoln Co., WY but Viola Cemetery may be in Sublette Co. Thanks,

Joe Williams <jwms442@earthlink.net>
