Gordon, Mae Urbanek in her "Wyoming Place Names" lists Punteney, Hot Springs County, discontinued ranch post office named for V. D. Punteney, ranch owner. I could not find the location on late 19th century Wyoming maps. On modern maps there are Putney Flats, Putney Mine, and a high point named Putney all about 25 miles northwest of Thermopolis along Cottonwood Creek. These may or may not be the same name as Punteney. More research could probably pin down the location.
