I noticed a response to your post in your original link indicating the aircraft is of the 94th Fighter Squadron. More conflicting information...isn't that great. However, the post may be correct.

The same photo that I referenced that has the aircraft "UNQ" is also on the 1st Fighter Group's homepage here;

That page states the following referencing the aircraft codes;

In 1943 the different squadrons began to apply specific colors to their tailbooms, wingtips and prop tips. The 27th.FS Used red,(Squadron Codes beginning with HV), the 71st.FS used White (Squadron Codes beginning with LM,)and the 94th.FS used yellow, (Squadron Codes beginning with UN.)

The Air Force has made mistakes before in making identifications...wouldn't be the first time. I was in the Air Force for 31 years and have seen it happen. I would think that the men that flew the aircraft would know their markings. I would agree with the other post and go with the 94th Fighter Squadron of the same 1st Fighter Group, 12th Air Force.

I also believe that my first link to you on the different codes was in error regarding the 84th FS code as "UN". The 84th FS was under the 78th Fighter Group and carried the code "WZ".
