Thank you, you are being a big help.
I am looking at my Dad's 'Notice of Separation From U.S. Naval Service' form. Numbers 1-4 are in the larger first box. However on my form #1 is 'Serial or File No.', which on his form is: 313412, with the #2 under those numbers, so that number could be 3134122, but there are no dashes. #2 is Name (last, first, middle) #3 is 'Rate and Class/or Rank and classification' which on his form is: LT(JG) S USNR 1000-29.
I think you are right that he was not on a ship but a duty 'station'. Thanks again!
