No real expert...but I don't think you need his SS# to try to obtain medical records. Other options are to contact the VA, a VFW and/or the Sexton of the Cemetery where he is buried as they may have some of his military records on file. Also, have you tried to obtain his records using Standard Form 180? There was a big fire in 1973 that destroyed millions of records, but you may be one of the lucky ones to get his full or partial file. It will take a long time if they are able to find it. And if you get the "standard" reply...it burned, do the followup. Google Standard Form 180 and fill in as much as you can before submitting it.
But if you want his SS#, I have found it. Email me and I will send it to you. Put his name in the subject line and SS# so I won't think it is SPAM
