Is it possible for a veteran to realize they have earned an award?

I've always wondered this. Both my father, grandfather, and great grandfather were army during the Vietnam, WWII, and WWI. My grandfather was heavily involved in the Army Reserves after serving overseas in WWII. He never stopped participating. But could he, his son and father have earned awards and medals without realizing it? My dad said that there was so much chaos and so many soldiers its hard to keep track..
