Raymond Wingate of Marvin Griffen's Unit

Hello, I am looking for any information on a unit led by Marvin Griffen, future Georgia Governor. He enlisted in Bainbridge, Ga with my grandfather Raymond Wingate, and they served together overseas in New Guinea, during WWII. Anything, and I mean anything would help. Mr. Griffen passed away in 1982, and my grandfather died in 2007. I am having the hardest time trying to find exact dates and specific information on my papa's service and the units time in New Guinea. I have a few pics of my grandfather there on the beach, if this could help. I don't even know the unit's title and designation.
