Hi, A few things to try. Contact the county clerk or state archives of the state he settled down in after the war. Hopefully he registered his discharge which should show what medals he was awarded.
Secondly, if he had a military burial, contact the funeral home and/or Sexton of the cemetery and VA. They should have some military information on him if he did have a military burial.
See if you can find his name in this list of Bronze Star recipients
And see if you can obtain his service number from this site before you start your requests as that should hopefully speed things along.
And lastly, you could try to obtain his military records but they may have been burned in the fire of 1973. Google Standard Form 180 and it will tell you how to write for them. You'll probably get the standard response of "burned" but if his last name is in the alpha of A-G, there may be a good chance that they do have them. H and beyond may have partial or none at all.
Hope someone else can give you other options. Good Luck!!
