Who can be considered a veteran?

Hi, I have recently seen several referrals to men/women who died in a war stated as veterans. I have always thought that a veteran had to be someone who served in the armed forces and if they were in a war, survived. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether someone who died in a war would be considered a veteran? My personal opinion is that they aren't a veteran. Thanks for any input.
